There are several interesting articles written by Gene Wilder during his life that detail Gilda's battle with cancer. In 1998, Wilder went into further detail about Radner’s cancer treatment in the book “Gilda’s Disease,” which he co-wrote with oncologist Dr. Steven Piver. Wilder later testified before Congress about his experiences with the medical community and urged the members to make experimental drugs more widely available.

Gene Wilder was also a comic genius.

Did anyone see the recent SNL "50th Anniversary" Special? It was very good. One of the features had Lorraine Newman going back to the set and reminiscing about her times on SNL. She did a great job, but she's now unrecognizable compared to what she looked like in the mid-1970s.

Steve Martin, 79, did the monologue, which was as funny as ever. Paul Simon, who must be even older, sang one of his songs, accompanied by a contemporary singer I've never heard of.

Eddie Murphy came back. They even had Woody Harrelson in one skit. I remember the last time Woody hosted the show, he ad-libbed a joke about not trusting Big Pharma. I thought for sure that would get him permanently banned .... but, I was happy to see, it didn't.

You start to write it off and then the show hits its groove with a new cast and rallies. It has been, for the most part, consistently good for 50 years. I'd say there are at least 25 cast members who became iconic cultural figures at least for a while.

I read her book about her battle with cancer twice (this book was written by GIlda not Gene). it was so sad. She was misdiagnosed for so long that by the time they got serious about her issues it was too late.

I didn't know Gilda's father was a well-known and successful hotel operator in Detroit. This reminds me of bio's I've read about Carley Simon and Julia Dreyfus of "Seinfeld." Both of their fathers were also very successful, rich and influential as well.

This is another one of those, “I had no idea…” It sounds like Gene Wilder truly loved and was devoted to her. What a beautiful & tragic story.

That unfortunately is not uncommon with ovarian cancer; very difficult to diagnose.

Thank you. A master of her craft. How sad that so called "comedians" today are not even shadows of people like her who did comedy for the sake of it and had no evil intent.

I'm surprised -- no mention of her eating disorder. Am I remembering that wrong?

No sir, you are correct. There were certainly times in her life when she struggled with eating disorders, and according to Gilda her own mother suggested diet pills when she was just a teenager. Did not mention simply because, unlike Karen Carpenter, Gilda did not suffer any real damage from her eating disorders, i.e. hospitalization, etc. I think the issue turned out to be more of an anxiety problem than a true disorder - just my deduction mind you.

As always, I wish I had hours to devote to these interesting people, but sadly that is not the case. That is why I ENCOURAGE readers to interject their own knowledge and opinions to fully define the topic.

Thank you for bringing up the eating disorder, it was certainly a part of her story!!

I encourage you to do a quick search 'Gilda Radner eating disorder" -- you don't have eating disorders from 9 years old to SNL days and suffer no consequences. In my opinion she set herself up for major health challenge when she put herself into long-term starvation/bulimia mode. You just cannot do that with no consequences.
